Art et Photographie FEMALE NUDES Paris 1950s Brassai

The exceptional sepia tones female nudes of Art et Photographie magazine presented a new, post-war view of the nude, seen in close-up with portions of the figure bleeding off the edges of the page. A short lived (seven issues?) 16 page, small format publication printed in gravure, filled cover to cover with photographs by Brassai, Dorvyne, Nora Dumas, Ergy Landau, Andre Steiner, Lokay, Quinio-Elmerich, Koruna and George Henri. Here are covers and images from a recently acquired group available for sale in my eBay store.

ETUDES DE NUS Portfolio French Nudes 1948 Brassai

The exquisite Etudes de Nus published in Paris, 1948 by Editions du Chene and beautifully printed by gravure. Twenty-four individually printed plates, loosely laid-in to a paper portfolio wrapper. Contributors include Brassai, Nora Dumas, Feher, Pierre Jahan, Ergy Landau and Sougez.

ART et PHOTOGRAPHIE French Nudes 1950 Brassai

 

At the debut of the 1950s Paris was still in recovery from the effects of WWII. Publishers slowly began to get back to work and Art et Photographie was created. The sixteen page, small format magazine, printed in sepia toned gravures was filled cover to cover with full-page bleeds of the female form. Here are covers and a few photos from the first five issues, published circa 1950. The list of contributors was like a who's who of Parisian genre photographers of the era: Brassai (thirty-one photos included), Dorvyne, Nora Dumas, Ergy Landau, Andre Steiner, Lokay, Quinio-Elmerich, George Henri and Koruna. ETUDES DE NUS Paris 1948 Female Nudes

One of the first important post WWII publications devoted to the female form was Etudes de Nus, Editions du Chene Paris,1948. Beautifully printed in gravure, a folio size publication with 24 photographs on plates, loose in the wrapper, ready to be framed. Includes female nudes by Brassai, Nora Dumas, Feher, Pierre Jahan, Ergy Landau, Liu-Shu-Chang, Philippe Pottier, Jeanne Robert, Seeberger and Sougez, all displaying a simplicity and purity of form.
