SPANKING PEN PALS Fetish S/M Magazines '50s/60s

In the '50s, at the beginning of the era of digest sized, independently published fetish magazines, there was a particular interest in female domination, spanking and corporal punishment. Following in the shadows of John Willie's Bizarre magazine founded in 1946 in Canada, some of the earliest adherents were, what can be best described as fetish-zines. Diy "cellar jobs" produced with the aid of simple printing techniques and a stapler.

My favorite of the genre: Spanking Pen Pals, ran for only a hand full of issues and like all of the titles posted here, is quite rare. Here, in no particular order, are some covers from deep in my archives including, an early version of Corporal, Conqueress Club Magazine a comic book-like, fem/dom s&m title; a few Satellite Publications titles: Bondage Promanade, Spanking Sisters and Miss Flagella In Bondage (published "off-shore" in Jersey City due to censorship restrictions brought on by the Irving Klaw prosecution in New York City) plus a miscellany of other rarely seen, one-shot titles: Captive Wolf, Unmanned and Captive Stud.

GARTER BELTS & STOCKINGS Men's Magazines 1960s

In the early 1960s what was emerging from the publishers of men's magazines was to desire for much more than nudity. The response was a variety of titles from major publishers focusing on models initially posed in very sexy lingerie: garter belts, stockings, panties, bras, girdles, corsets and high heels. To that end Sampson, Selbee, Health Knowledge and Parliament created titles that brought the contents, first explored in the "fetish" digests (Exotique, Bizarre) of the late 1950s, into full-size magazines.

Here is a sampling of some of the best titles of the the era, circa 1963 ~ 1965. Above the penultimate Focus on Bettie Page featuring Bettie cover to cover plus French Spice, Pepper, High Heels, Scarlet, Nylon Mood, Satana, Go and Black Satin.

BIZARRE LIFE Magazine: Fem/Dom Fetishism S/M 1960s

Spinning out of the universe of the New York based specialty publishers like Selbee and Burmel came Bizarre Life. The first issue, inspired by both Bizarre and Exotique magazines, was published by Unique Publications in Toronto. The content but was harder edged leaning towards fem/dom photo stories, fantasy articles and illustrations by Eric Stanton and Gene Bilbrew. Issue two came from BiLife Publications in Delaware, which eventually changed to Condolidated Publications. Bizarre Life's "fetish fashions" photographs were greatly influenced by the English magazine Atomage, published by John Sutcliffe. Early issues have contributions that are clearly from Atomage and similar English rubber and leather fetish publications. Here's a taste of the first few issues.
