Adult only Italian comics, fumetti, flourished in the 1970s and were, along with similar publications published in Paris, a genre unto themselves. Part comic, part graphic novel, part underground comic, most were ongoing serials starring super villains. Titles include Pussycat, Malkrak, Sexy, Fanthoman, Eroticon, Diavola, Lucifera, Vampira and the color illustrated, Jolonka.

POLICE GAZETTE 1940s Burlesque + Crime Stories

Immediately identifiable in the 1930s and '40s by its pink pages, The National Police Gazette, a precursor to the Hush Hush, Confidential magazines of the late 1940s and '50s, covered sensational stories of true crime and scandal, while featuring a top burlesque performer on each cover. The American version of the Police Gazette started life in 1845(!) and includes during this period, classified "personal" ads which thinly disguise offers for call girls and prostitutes. The covers posted here are from magazines published in the early 1940s with headlines about murder, drug addiction, vice, massage parlors, jewel thieves, orgies and much more.
