Paris Paper Show February 2016

The boxes are back from LA and the material sorted out. I'm pulling some things and along with ditching my summer wear for winter long sleeves, a coat and gloves, heading out to Paris for the February edition of the paper show. Looking forward to seeing all the usual suspects, spending time with friends and colleagues and finding paper treasures for my clients and the upcoming fairs. I'll be there 2.25 to 3.5 so let me know if you're in town, we can meet for drinks. Above, the boudoir room at Nicole Canet's Au Bonheur du Jour galerie.

There are two great shows featuring contemporary artists at the Arts Factory Galerie and the Halles St.Pierre.

BERLIN Books & Postcards = Friends & Colleagues

Berlin for me is synonymous with art, creativity, a vibrant gallery scene, book stores and lots of street art, graffiti, paste-ups and stencils. First stop: visit Anna and Christian, the amazing, silk-screen printing couple behind Re:Surgo! at their gallery on Tor Strasse. It was great to see them and I'm very pleased they gave me the opportunity to buy some of their out-of-print editions which you will be able to purchase at my stand at the PS1 Art Book Fair in the fall!

First pass of David Sandlin's new book on the drying rack.
I will have copies for sale at PS1 in September.

A unique experience in all my years in the trade was to become friends with a dealer and his whole family! Such is my enduring relationship with the Krauses. I'm pictured here with Jurgen and his son Florian. Jurgen and his wife Christina have recently retired from the postcard trade, nonetheless when I got to their house, Jurgen wanted to know "... do you want to look at some postcards I set aside for you before we go to dinner?" "Ja...bitte!"

A favorite spot in Berlin is the court yard of the one of the Hackescher Hof buildings in East Berlin (Rosenthaler Strasse) that is completely covered with all types of street art ...

Paris PAPER SHOW Feb'15 CHARLIE HEBDO Hommage

Back in Paris for the February paper show at Champerret there was a special exhibition hastily put together by one of the dealers, Philippe Grosjean. It took a brief look at the history of French illustrated satirical journals starting in the 1860s with L'Eclipse through to the present day with the main focus on Charlie Hebdo. Although the installation of the exhibition was basic and quickly pulled together it was very well done, presenting the generational influences over 150 years that have brought illustrated satire to the forefront in free speech discussions through out the world.

No matter what you think of Charlie Hebdo, its right to exist is essential, more so than ever, after the events surrounding the terrorist attacks in Paris in January. It was well represented amongst the "generalist" paper dealers with everything from single copies to massive piles of Charlie, Charlie Hebdo and it's predecessor, Hara-Kiri. For a history of these publications go here.

The first issue November 23, 1970. Note the match sticks used to hold the magazines in place in the corrugated cardboard mount!

Charlie was the predecessor to Charlie Hebdo and featured syndicated comic strips from a wide spectrum of newspapers, focused primarily on American serials. The title of the magazine, taken from Charles Shultz's Charlie Brown, featured Snoopy, posed on the roof of his dog house, on the cover of the first issue. Above, Chester Gould's Dick Tracy on the cover of issue 20.

~~

Seen at the fair the (un)usual mix of old paper, posters, books, postcards and original artwork spread around the very large exhibition space, which once again saw a drop in the number of dealers. It is the way of most collectible fairs with ever decreasing attendance by both sellers and buyers. I for one love this show and wouldn't miss it!!

Paris Paper Show: Champerret February 13~17th

Peering in the Window Librairie de la Lune, Paris
Brassai ca.1930s

Back to Paris in a few days for the Salon de Vieux Papier (Old Paper Show) at the Espace Champerret. Looking forward to digging through the shelves, boxes and piles of books, magazines and ephemera for "les untrouvables", unfindable treasures. More so than ever, It takes time, patience and a love of the hunt to discover anything worthwhile.

Note that there will be a last minute exhibition added to the show dedicated to "freedom of the press" as depicted in French illustrated periodicals, specifically a brief history of satirical publications, including an homage to Charlie Hebdo.

Email me if you're in Paris and we can meet up for coffee or drinks. I'll be in Paris 2.10 to 2.20 and possibly after.

'ZINE FESTIVAL Paris October '14 Artist's Books

An unexpected and wonderful surprise was the Festival Fanzines happening on the weekend I arrived in Paris. After making believe I was sleeping the night after my arrival, I was up early and headed to the 20th arrondisement. First to check out a show of serigraphed books and then over to the Mediatheque Marguerite Duras, a modern public library/media center on the rue Bagnolet, where the festival was being hosted. This was an artist's book fair at a contemporary, modern public library. I like that. The show is for the moment the only artist's book fair in Paris.

The show was small, about thirty-five tables crowded into one room. The energy was high and wonderful to see so many young French publishers offering their books and prints for sale. I found some great books which I will have with me at the Los Angeles Artist's Book Fair in January. It would be great to see it expand (not too big!) attracting international artist's and publishers.

Next Show: Paris Paper February @ Espace Champerret

The boxes are back from LA and sorted out as I repack and take some of that material with me to Paris for the Paper Show next week. Once again at Espace Champerret, however in an abbreviated, more humane version running from the 14th to the 18th. I'll be arriving on the 12th and at the venue on and off throughout the duration of the show and departing Paris on the 20th. Let me know if you're there or in the city and would like to get together for drinks. Show details here.

I will be "standless" shopping and carpet-bagging my way around the show in countless rotations. The "vieux papier" shows continue a slow decline and the venue of late gloomy with all the bad economic news. Nonetheless many of the dealers create excellent displays of their best material helping to make this one of my favorite shows in one of my favorite cities.

Next Fair: Paris Paper Show October @ Espace Champerret

Back to Paris for the paper show, once again at Espace Champerret. Arriving on the 22nd, l'll be at the venue from the start of the fair on the 25th and off and on through the 30th. Let me know if you're there or in the city and would like to get together for drinks.

Once again I will be "standless", shopping and carpetbagging my way, in countless rotations around the show. The "vieux papier" scene is certainly on the decline and the room somewhat gloomy with all the bad economic news. Nonetheless, many of the dealers create excellent displays of their best material. It remains one of my favorite shows in one of my favorite cities.

Other salons, events and happenings: the annual FIAC at the Grande Palais (worth the hefty admission price just to be inside and roam the marvelous steel girders of the 1890s crystal palace); the first Paris Outsider Art Fair; the 25th Anniversary Exhibition of Raw Visions magazine at the Halle Saint Pierre, the Show-Off near the FIAC across the Champs Elysee and a highly anticipated exhibition of corsets, undergarments and lingerie at the Louvre design center, Les Arts Decoratifs.  Plus the new show on the male nude at the Musee d'Orsay.
